Nova Scotia's First Cage Fight

Recently there has been some controversy over allowing Nova Scotia's first mixed martial arts cage fight to occur next month. The purpose of the event is for two people to step into a 6x6 metre hexagonal cage and beat the hell out of their opponent until they give up. The event allows punching, kicking, throwing, choking. Competitors aren't allowed to elbow people in the face, back of the head, spine, or hit the groin.

The controversy is with the boxing coaches and authorities, saying that it's too dangerous. They also say that it won't help the image of boxing, saying people will automatically associate boxing with the brutal cage fights. The boxing commission is willing to suspend boxers if they compete.

The fighters are required to pass a medical exam before they are allowed to compete, this proves they can defend themselves. Doctors, referees, fighters and the fighters’ corner, can all stop the fight if necessary. Referees are educated as well, ensuring that the event is as safe as possible.

In boxing the winner is the one who gets the most points by landing enough punches, or knocks the other out. This gives it only two sides, one side a battle of endurance, on the other side, allowing knockouts makes it no better than cage fighting.

I'm not concerned with the image of boxing, if anything boxing gives fighting a bad image. In real fighting, there aren’t 10 rounds, towels to throw in, or rules. It's your well being or theirs, your life or theirs. Cage fighting is pretty close to this without people constantly dropping dead. Boxing seems pretty far from this, pretty far from fighting.

Finally, I say let'em go at it! These are trained professionals, they understand the risk, and they can cope with the pain, and agony of getting the crap beat out of them. Skilled fighters also have control over their mind, body, and actions, they wouldn't be skilled fighters otherwise.
