Movie Review: Tristan & Isolde

Tristan & Isolde
Genre: Action Drama Romance
Rating: 7/10

This was pretty decent movie. It had a good combination of action and drama. The characters were developed well, but not as good as they could have been, as I didn't get overly attached; I think that might have the price they paid for combining action with drama though. The action was good, frequent enough and realistic. It was packed with content and I don't think much could have been changed concerning the plot.

Movie Review: The Triangle

The Triangle
Genre: Sci-Fi Mystery
Rating: 7/10

This was an ok movie. It was really dragged out; they could have shortened it by one or two hours to make it more intense, and put you on the edge of your seat; it was 4.5 hours total in length. I also had a problem with some of the scientific things they presented; a few things I had no idea what they were and they didn't explain them, left me slightly confused. Other than that it had great special effects and presented some great new ideas about the Bermuda Triangle. The characters developed decently, and it did keep a good air of mystery as the plot prorgressed.

Movie Review: Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Genre: Computer Generated Sci-Fi Fantasy Action
Rating: 8/10

This was an intense movie. The action was amazing, and it was astounding how good the computer generated graphics were. The story, characters, and creatures were creative. The only real problem I had was that the story and characters lacked some depth. I would have also liked to have known more about the side characters that the main character fought with. This is the second of two Final Fantasy movies released to date, and you don't need to watch the first to watch this.

Movie Review: Silent Hill

Silent Hill
Genre: Mystery Horror Thriller
Rating: 8/10

This, overall, was a pretty good movie. It kept good mystery, and I wasn't sure what was going on untill they told/showed me at the end. It was kinda freaky, but not too extreme; I prefer extreme though. The thrill scenes were ok but not over the top. It was interesting, and eventful. This is one of the better made horror movies I've seen in a while.

Movie Review: Hostel

Hostel
Genre: Gross Out Horror Thriller
Rating: 5/10

This movie wasn't that great at all. The first third to half of the movie was wasted, mainly focused on sex and drugs. There was very little mystery after that, as the entire movie and plot got blown wide open; mystery is something that should be at least slightly present in a horror film. After that it was mainly senseless gore, as the main character attempted to reach his goal, poorly directed as well. I expected the gore, and cringed a little, but it could have been better; I seen flaws in it. This seemed like an attempt at imitating the Saw films, it failed miserably.

Book Review: The Ragwitch

The Ragwitch
Author: Garth Nix
Genre: Fantasy Adventure
Rating: 9/10

This was a great book. It was creative in a simple way, the characters were well developed, and meshed well giving it good quality. The plot was great, eventful, and had a number of twists to make it interesting and a little unpredictable. It didn't quite hook me like Sabriel did, but then again I hadn't read any fantasy for months before Sabriel.

Nix strikes again!

Movie Reviews

Movies: Fire Down Below, Appleseed, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, A Sound of Thunder, Mind Hunters, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Corpse Bride, Doom, Fun With Dick and Jane, Wake Of Death.

Fire Down Below
Genre: Action
Rating: 10/10
I watched this over the weekend and remembered how great it is. Steven Segal is one of my favorite action actors. The action was great, and realistic. The characters were well built; the story and its progression was good, and the movie had a good moral to it.

Appleseed
Genre: Anime Sci-Fi Action
Rating: 10/10
This was a great movie. It was interesting. The character development was good, and progressed well. It had an air of mystery and I was guessing a little as to what would happen. The action was great and put me wide eyed on the edge of my seat. It had great computer generated graphics and was creative. It was also another movie making a statement about us humans.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Genre: Anime Sci-Fi Adventure
Rating 9/10
This was good. It kept me hooked start to finish, it was eventful and a very good moral, seems to have some foresight. I also read it was banned for its environmentalist feel. I can't wait for the Ohmu to rise here; you'll understand what I mean when you watch it. The movie was eventful, creative and had well built progressing characters.

A Sound of Thunder
Genre: Sci-Fi Adventure
Rating: 8/10
This was a good movie. It was a creative concept I do however think their core concept of time was flawed. I also think they could have been a little more creative in the line of antagonistic creatures. Aside from that the graphics, adventure and suspense was great. The characters were developed decently.

Mind Hunters
Genre: Action Thriller
Rating: 8/10
This was a rather good movie. It had a good character development and still maintained an air mystery. It was suspenseful and had plenty of action. The fight scenes weren't exactly flawless, and it seemed dumb that a smart girl like that wouldn't have known the most basic thing that water neutralizes acids, it's like, chem 101.

Brotherhood of The Wolf
Genre: Mystery Adventure
Rating: 7/10
This had potential but failed. I thought the story was good, just poorly conducted and dragged out. The character progression would have been good had they made more of a gradual change opposed to a sudden change in a key role. The change was justified but it would have been better to hint at the unused skills throughout the movie. I liked the concept and the fight scenes were decent. It also had bad dubbing, it was orignally french; the DVD offers both languages.

Corpse Bride
Genre: Claymation Feel Good
Rating: 7/10
This was an ok movie. I however thought it was lacking in dept and comedy. The story was half decent and I didn't mind the music. I know it's only a kids movie, but I've seen plenty of kids movies that interest me as an adult.

Doom
Genre: Sci-Fi Action
Rating: 6/10
This, sadly, was rather disappointing. I don't like The Rock anymore, he is the same character in all of his movies; I've seen plenty of action actors and it's not overly difficult to vary from role to role, movie to movie. I played the video game Doom as a kid, and this lacked most of the creatures, including the cooler ones; thinking about it makes me wonder if they were really trying to make it a down to earth horror movie, a shame if they did; come to think of it, it seems a lot like Resident Evil. I hated the first person shooter part near the end, it was utterly annoying, and all the bad guys stopped so he can reload his weapon, stupid.

Fun with Dick and Jane
Genre: Comedy
Rating 6/10
This was also disappointing. I didn't find it overly funny, and with the unrealistic idea of them being robbers, only made it one of them stupid comedies. The story did progress relatively well though, and the characters weren't so bad.

Wake of Death
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/10
Skip this, whatever you do; this is no come back for Jean-Claude Van Damme. Hand to hand action was sparse, it seemed dragged out and mostly boring, the characters were poorly developed and they still tried tying drama in with it. The logic was ridiculous too, who the hell goes into a big fight with handguns shooting 20 bullets per body.

Series Review: Ninja Scroll

Ninja Scroll
Genre: Anime Fantasy Adventure
Rating: 9/10

This was an awesome anime series, even if short lived. Ninja Scroll had a western gun slinging type movie feel to it, from the music, to the actual design of the episodes. The characters were amazingly creative, and I saw little similarity between them. The action was awesome.

Each episode could have been watch independently without causing much confusion and they all fit together nicely in the grand scheme of things. I do however feel that the ending was somewhat abrupt and could have been better.

I highly recommend this.

Movie Review: Stay

Stay
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Rating: 6/10

This movie was intriguing and interesting, characters were decently built, suspense a tad short, and the mystery of it all was poorly conducted. I had a problem with what the hell was going on, even after the end. Only after watching the movie, then after reading a site, did I realize what the hell was happening.

Movie Review: Vampire D

Vampire D
Genre: Anime Action Adventure
Rating: 9/10

This was a good movie. The only thing I had a problem with was the boobs, I mean I like boobs, but they weren't needed at all in the movie. It was also futuristic, and it was interesting how they incorporated that. Very dynamic with the characters. It also gave me an idea about hero type characters, and their weaknesses.

Movie Review: Laputa Castle in the Sky

Laputa Castle in the Sky
Genre: Anime Fantasy Adventure
Rating: 9/10

This was a good movie. Like all the good movies I watch, the story, characters, action-adventure was all good. I found it to be a creative movie, aside from having an atlantis feel too it, with a hidden island and what not. It wasn't like Howl's Moving Castle, or Spirited Away. It had a good climatic plot and an underlying message about humanity.

Movie Reviews

King Kong
Genre: Action Adventure Drama
Rating: 9/10
This was an excellent movie. The characters were well developed, action scenes well played, graphics good, and sound fantastic. The only problem I have with it is, yet again, it's been re-released like 100 times.

Akira
Genre: Anime Sci-fi Adventure
Rating: 9/10
This was yet another futureistic anime movie that I watched. It was good, the storyline was well laid out, characters were swell, and the action was ok. It's an older movie, I think, and the quality of picture wasn't as good as it is today. It was kind of predictable. Also on the version I have the dubbing was off key, so it was like one of those chineese/japaneese movies where the lips just aren't right.

The Ring of the Nibelungs
Genre: Fantasy Adventure Drama
Rating: 8/10
This was a pretty good movie; it was interesting and had a good story line. The only problem was that at a certain point, seemingly early in the movie, all the action died down. This ruined the effect of having a climactic point in the story. It also gave it the effect of it becoming more of a drama film. Because it became more of a drama, it required a certain level of care or connectivity to the characters, and I had little of that even at the end of the movie. Things also seemed a little left open at the end, and I had to assume that the tragedy of the story was a result of something I shouldn't say because it may ruin the movie.

Spirited Away
Genre: Anime Feel-Good Fantasy
Rating: 7/10
These anime movies are strange. Not in their subject matter, but in the way the film is. It has very little climactic point in it and things just happened in a barely eventful way. Somehow though it manages to keep me interested, and I don’t feel like I wasted my time after watching it. I don’t quite get.
